The growth in take-up of smartphones and tablet devices has made longitudinal and context-aware documenting of daily life easier. The Contextual Activity Sampling is a research methodology for the contextual tracking of activities. To support this methodology, an IT-system called CASS (Contextual Activity Sampling System) was developed.
It consists of a backend service and a front-end system. The front-end system needs to run in different devices. Instead of developing a separate software for all major device platforms we designed and implemented a software architecture that is based on HTML5 and enables basic functionalities to run in browsers and enhanced functionalities to run as native applications.
Thus CASS usage as a research tool will be widened as it supports a large base of different types of devices from PCs to tablets and smart phones.
