Breaking Barriers - Supporting Lower Secondary Schools´ Subject Teachers in Encountering Students Arriving from Crisis Countries

About

In a welfare society, the target is to ensure equal participation for everyone. Supporting children in the early stages is especially important, as it helps them to find their resources and strengths and take part in a positive way in community building. When an immigrant comes from a crisis country, there can be many stress factors relating to the process of migration. Unfamiliarity with the language and culture of the host country is likely to make the acculturation process more difficult.

Inclusive education is the basis of equality in many countries. A classroom in inclusive schools is the place where the learners’ diversity is accepted and worked with. We will strengthen the teachers and other staff in our teams by improving the support system in educational institutions.

Project is part of the international project Breaking Barriers - Improving the role and approaches of the Support system and improving its availability in educational institutions. Educational institutions from Latvia and Estonia are also involved in this Interreg project.

Our Goals

The goal of the project “Breaking Barriers” in Finland is:

In this project, four workshops for immigrant students and for teachers and other staff will be organized and analyzed. In addition, we organize seminars for teachers and other staff, of how to support immigrant students who have difficulties in schools.
