Metropolia IT Pathway in a nutshell
- Start your Metropolia IT studies in the modern Karamalmi campus, located in Espoo in the capital region of Finland
- After you have successfully completed 30 ECTS credits in IT Pathway studies in autumn 2025, you may apply to Bachelor of Engineering Degree Programme in Information Technology and you will be offered a study place.
- Your pathway studies are credited as part of your degree to fasten your path to a bachelor’s degree

Admission to Pathway studies
- Application period: February 15th, 2025 - March 23rd, 2025
- Pathway studies during: August 4, 2025 - December 12, 2025
- Fee for pathway studies is 3.500,00 € (VAT included)

- Students are selected on First come - First served basis.
- Number of student places: 40 (The studies will start only if there is a sufficient number of eligible applicants to be admitted. The minimum number of students is 30).
Eligibility criteria
You must hold a foreign qualification that provides eligibility for higher education studies in your home country.
In addition to the above mentioned qualification, you must have an acceptable proof of English language skills (please, see below).
Admission documents to the Metropolia IT Pathway studies
- A scanned copy of your final secondary school certificate (or equivalent)
- Transcript of Records
- Copy of the passport
- A scanned copy of the English language certificate.
- English language skills can be proved by the following document
1. English language test results:
- IELTS Academic*: a minimum total score of 6.0 (Test sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking)
- TOEFL Academic (iBT)*: a minimum total score of 60 (Test sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing)
- PTE Academic*: a minimum total score of 55 (Test sections: Speaking and Writing, Reading, and Listening)
- Cambridge English Scale Score: a minimum total score of 169 (Test sections: Reading and Use of English, Writing, Listening, and Speaking)
2. Upper secondary degree or Higher education degree completed in English in an EU/EEA country, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Switzerland, United Kingdom, or the United States. Please note that your degree must be taught and assessed entirely in English**.
* IELTS Academic UKVI, IELTS Online, PTE Academic Online, PTE Academic UKVI and TOEFL iBT Home Edition are also accepted.
**The language of instruction must be clearly stated on official documents. You can also document this by submitting a certificate/letter from your university / educational institution in addition to your official study documentation.
Instead of English proficiency test, applicant can also provide SAT result with the following scores: 500 for Evidence Based Reading and Writing section and 500 for Math section.
NOTE: When using an English language test result (IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, Cambridge or SAT) for proving English language skills, certificates printed or delivered by the applicants themselves are not taken into account but the results must be sent to Metropolia electronically by the test organizer and available/verifiable as described above. Metropolia's TOEFL code is 3804.
Pathway description
Begin your academic journey in Finland with the Metropolia IT Pathway (30 ECTS), specifically designed for international students planning to complete their bachelor’s degree in the Information Technology in Metropolia.

The first half of the pathway studies will take place both onsite at Metropolia UAS's Karamalmi campus and online, with live lectures streamed from campus. Please note that these lectures will not be recorded, so attendance is mandatory for course completion.
The second half of the pathway studies will be conducted entirely onsite at the Karamalmi campus.
All lectures are conducted by the lecturers of Metropolia UAS.
Successfully completed studies by the given deadline will grant you a study place in the Bachelor´s degree programme in Information Technology. The credits gained during the pathway program will be credited as part of your degree in full extent.
Course content is preliminary and will be confirmed by the beginning of application period.
Teaching and lessons will be implemented between August 4 - December 14, 2025
Each course is 5 ECTS credits, altogether pathway studies are 30 ECTS (1 ECTS is 27 hours of work). Courses will be assessed as passed or failed.
Pathway studies will consist of the following onsite / online courses conducted by the lecturers of the international degree programmes in Metropolia.
Courses from 4 August to 19 October 2025 (Onsite and Online)
One of the courses will be offered from 4 August to 7 September 2025 and the other two will run from 4 August/18 August to 19 October 2025.
The student will learn to enhance their professional proficiency in English and to use appropriate register in working life and academic situations. The student will gain an understanding of writing formal texts in English and how to cite references, as well as creating reference lists. The student will learn to write topical and formal texts and develop their overall professional English language skills.
On completion of the course, the student will understand simple and clearly spoken Finnish in very familiar everyday situations. The student will be able to tell briefly about his/her background, home and daily routines and understand short texts about familiar topics. The student’s communication skills will correspond to the skill level A1 as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CERF).
On the completion of the course, the student will be proficient in simplifying expressions, equations, and systems of equations for future applications. The student understands complex numbers and their practical uses. Additionally, the student acquires the skill to effectively utilize vectors in his/her academic pursuits.
Courses from 20 October to 14 December 2025 (Only Onsite)
On completion of the course the student has gained the ability to write and maintain Python scripts and develop Python based programs. The student can act as an active member of a project group and communicate appropriately in oral and written interaction situations typical for project work.
On completion of the course, the student has ability to understand and maintain SQL and relational databases
On completion of the course the student can explain the SI unit system, manipulate numbers and convert units using scientific notations. The student knows how to make quick order of magnitude estimates and explain the concept of force and its role in causing change in motion, the concept of work and evaluate the work done by force. The student is able to describe the relation between energy and power
