Open UAS - Language Skills and Other Requirements

Language Skills

Degree programmes conducted in Finnish language require the minimum of B2 level English language skills.

Minimum of B2 level English language skills are required in English language degree programmes.

English study materials can be used in Finnish Degree Programmes.

University of Applied Sciences studies require sufficient language skills and students are independently responsible of having such skills.

You can use the Dialang language test as a self-assessment tool to evaluate if your skills are sufficient to University of Applied Sciences level. The test includes the below sections of different fields of language skills. Note! Some studies including pre-test might also require the Dialang test results and additional language test. There is always a mention of this in the path information.

  • writing
  • vocabulary
  • grammar

The language skill levels (A1 the lowest, C2 the highest) are described on the Council of Europe's pages:

  • A1 and A2: Basic User
  • B1 and B2: Independent User
  • C1 and C2: Proficient User

Study Skills

Open UAS students are required to have the same university level study skills as the Degree Students. Students themselves are responsible for having these skills. These skills include e.g. information searching skills and preparedness to write an essay answer. Usually a secondary level education (high school, vocational school) gives a good base for university level studies.

Master's Degrees

All Master's degree Open Study Paths (15 cr or 30 cr depending on the extent of the degree) require an appropriate Bachelor's Degree. This is checked of all students. All necessary information is mentioned in connection to the path information. Work experience is not required in Open Study Paths. If you later apply to degree studies on the Basis of Open UAS Studies, two years' work experience will be required after completing your Bachelor's degree.

In terms of Master's degree level individual courses, the above-mentioned requirement of Bachelor’s Degree is not obligatory but recommendable.

Other Requirements

Some Open UAS courses may have requirements about previous know-how. If so, there is always a mention about these prerequisites in connection to the course information. It is also possible to meet these prerequisites with corresponding prior learning. Students themselves are responsible for having the required competence. This is not checked by school.

Health Requirements

Those enrolling to study within Health Care and Social Services must have sufficient health and functional capacity to be capable of completing practical assignments and work placement periods as part of the studies.

Studying and working in a profession require good mental balance. The field is not suitable for illegal drug users or for alcohol or legal drug abusers.

Conditions such as musculoskeletal diseases, chronic skin diseases and allergies may lead to health issues during studies or later on in working life.

Universities of applied sciences may request students to produce an extract on criminal background before they go on a supervised period of work placement as part of studies, if working with minors forms an essential part of the work placement.

Universities of applied sciences are entitled to refer a student for a drug test, if there is reasonable suspicion of drug use.
