During this online course, you’ll learn the basic workflow of digital painting for games, from ideating and sketching to the final game-ready graphics. You will create game characters, environments, and various items. Along the way, you’ll learn how to enhance your art and find resources to develop your creative process.

The course has four parts: 1. Ideation and sketching, 2. Character art, 3. Environment art, and 4. Final Assignment.
The course has hands-on approach, with lots of practical exercises which let you improve your drawing and digital painting skills. Along the way, you will learn how to apply design principles, color theory and perspective in your game art.

Learning objectives

After completing this course, students understand different digital painting techniques that can be applied in 2D game art. They know the game art design process from background research to sketching and final game-ready art creation. They can apply color theory and design principles to their artistic work. As a final output of the course, students will create a visual plan for a platformer game.

None.

Teaching methods

100% online (self-study). This course includes theory and exercise parts.

Evaluation criteria

Pass: 80% of exercises done. Final assignment done with basic understanding and skills.

Fail: Less than 80% of exercises done. Final assignment either not completed or shows complete lack of understanding.
