Aims and target group of the education

The Bachelor of Engineering in Information and Communication Technology degree is provided as vocational labour market training and it is intended for customers of TE Services in Finland who are unemployed, under the threat of unemployment or furloughed or work part-time, and who are active job applicants. The education is funded by the Uusimaa Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (ELY Centre) and is free of charge for the participants. The studies are full-time and take from 18 months to two years, depending on previous studies and work experience. If a student who has been granted a study place finds employment during the studies, they can complete the degree alongside their work.

The aim of the studies is to complete a Bachelor of Engineering in Information and Communication Technology degree through flexible personal study paths. Special attention will be given to the completion of workplace-oriented studies and the studification of competence acquired through work. The training is provided as multiform studies.

The education is intended particularly for job applicants who have

  • an incomplete degree of Bachelor of Engineering in Information Technology or Information and Communication Technology, with at least 120 ECTS credits completed
  • a vocational degree related to Information Technology
  • a degree completed in a Finnish or foreign higher education institution, the content of which is related to the field of ICT (e.g. Bachelor of Business Administration) and which enables the student to complete the Bachelor of Engineering degree in 24 months.

A total of 30 students will be admitted to the studies

Applicants should have the general qualifications for undertaking higher education studies and the ability to complete online courses and possibly contact studies. Contact teaching is provided at Metropolia’s Karamalmi campus (Karaportti 2, Espoo) and Myllypuro campus (Myllypurontie 1, Helsinki). Online studies can be completed at any time, anywhere – all the student needs is a computer to complete online studies. On campus it is possible to use Metropolia’s computers in the PC classrooms. In contact teaching settings, the students are expected to use their own laptops. The students will have access to Metropolia’s IT support during their studies.

Information and Communication Technology Engineers have excellent employment opportunities. They can seek practical, innovative and constantly developing job positions in Finland and/or abroad. Their work is international and highly valued.

  • Fundamental studies in Information and Communication Technology 40 ECTS credits
  • Professional studies in Information and Communication Technology 115 ECTS credits
  • Language studies 15 ECTS credits
  • On-the-job training project 10 ECTS credits
  • Elective studies 15 ECTS credits
  • Work placement in the ICT sector 30 ECTS credits
  • Thesis 15 ECTS credits

The studies included in the modules and the personal study plan are tailored to each student based on accredited studies, prior learning acquired at work and the learning outcomes of the degree.

Information about the certificates attached to the email message

  • Applicants are personally responsible for ensuring that all documents related to the application are delivered to Metropolia during the application period. It is important that the applicants save as an attachment to the email message all the certificates concerning their situation that they wish to have considered in their application. Selection decisions can only be made based on certificates that are delivered.
  • Every applicant must attach their personal CV to the email message.
  • Certificates can be attached to the email message as a PDF file, a high-quality image file or a clear photo taken with a mobile phone.
  • Certificates relating to the applicant’s situation include a transcript of records for an incomplete Information and Communication Technology degree, a certificate of a completed degree, work certificates from the ICT sector and other certificates the applicant wishes to submit for consideration.
  • Instead of transcripts of records or certificates, proof of previous studies can also be provided by copying a link to the applicant’s My Studyinfo page at Opintopolku.fi. The link should display the following for all completed studies: name of the person who completed the studies, name of the studies completed, scope (ECTS), place and date where studies were completed, and the assessed grade.
  • Certificates attached to the email may not show the final four digits of the applicant’s personal identity code – they must be covered before the document is photographed or scanned.

The selection process has two stages

  1. In the preliminary selection, the applicants will be assessed to see whether they fulfil the selection criteria and are able to complete the studies within the set period.
  2. Those selected in the preliminary selection will be invited to an interview and/or initial test, which will be used as a basis for preparing preliminary personal study plans and career plans. These will be further specified once the studies commence. The time of the interview/initial test will be announced separately to the applicants who fulfil the criteria for the preliminary selection.

Final selection decisions will be announced no later than 3 June 2022
