We believe that through education and RDI activities, we can contribute to the success of the individual, society and Finland as a whole, and create a humane and hopeful future. Guided by our strategy, we respond to the changes taking place around us and strive for high societal impact.

Our strategic intent is to be a bold reformer of expertise and a builder of a sustainable future. We can achieve this long-term goal by joining forces with our students, staff, partners, and various actors in society.

To achieve our strategic intent, we have chosen five strategic themes that we will push ahead in the coming years:

Reforming lifelong learning

Metropolia boldly reforms expertise by making lifelong learning a seamless part of learners’ everyday life. Metropolia creates new competences for the needs of the changing working life.

At Metropolia, we believe in lifelong learning as part of people's different life situations, whether it is about degree studies or developing one's own competences. Guided by the strategy, we renew competence and learning solutions for the needs of the diversifying Helsinki Metropolitan Area.

Metropolia is firmly connected to working life and the development of society. We want to offer an education that carries into the future and that allows all our students to find their own place in the world. Phenomenon-based, learner-centred and ecosystem-based learning are important principles for us. We will continue integrating them into our education in the coming years.

Metropolia coordinates the European Universities Alliance U!REKA. The alliance partners work together to solve the climate challenges of cities and regions. Cooperation is carried out both in the field of research and innovation, but also by training skilled workforce.

Driving Phenomenon-based solutions

We want Metropolia to be known internationally for its innovative solutions to global challenges and as an impactful ecosystem partner in the future. The challenges are solved in Metropolia's three phenomenon-based innovation hubs, where we offer opportunities for experimentation and carry out high-quality applied research, development activities and innovations.

Our RDI-activities are phenomenon-based as major global challenges are often complex phenomena that require interdisciplinary and multi-professional solutions.

Our innovation hubs are ecosystem-based; solutions are created with different actors through bold thinking, as well as working and learning together. Only this way we can reach our goal to increase the social impact of our projects.

Building sustainable development and growth

At Metropolia, we are building a sustainable future by promoting the responsibility of our own operations and education and by developing sustainable development and growth solutions together with our partners. The global sustainability crisis requires us to act in an ecologically, socially, culturally and economically sustainable manner.

Responsibility and sustainable development will be integrated into Metropolia's studies so that everyone studying with us can both solve sustainability challenges in their own field and promote sustainable development and growth in working life and society.

Metropolia's business operations, such as commercial RDI activities or tailor-made training, are based on the principles of sustainable growth.

Metropolia is a carbon-neutral by 2030.

Forerunning digital transformation

Rapid technological development and digital transformation bring new opportunities, but at the same time challenge us to continuously renew our operations. Our goal is to be a forerunner in this transformation.

We use data, artificial intelligence and other digital solutions to support Metropolia's strategic management and decision-making. Metropolia has strong expertise in developing digital services and products, which is why the digital solutions developed by Metropolia are also widely used in the Finnish higher education sector.

We participate actively in the digital transformation at the national and the EU level.
