On October 25, 2024, the Estonian Academy of Sciences awarded the best Erasmus+ projects administered through Estonia from 2021 to 2023. The EBreast2 project aimed to improve the breast cancer care pathway for women through interprofessional collaboration, and won the award for Best Collaboration Partnership Project. Metropolia University of Applied Sciences was responsible for the scientific and content leadership of the project.

“Breast cancer is a common disease, affecting one in eight women during their lifetime. While over 90% of patients are alive five years after diagnosis thanks to treatments, care pathways are not always seamless, particularly from the perspective of interprofessional cooperation. We sought answers to this by researching the personal experiences of women with breast cancer regarding their care pathways and identifying connections within successful care pathways”, explains Eija Metsälä, Principal Lecturer at Metropolia and the project’s content leader.

Based on this research, the project developed a MOOC-style (Massive Open Online Courses) open learning platform for healthcare students and professionals involved in breast cancer treatment. The platform’s three modules focus on interprofessional collaboration among healthcare professionals in breast cancer care pathways, breast cancer treatments and their implementation, and the safety and high quality of care. Modules can be completed individually or as a whole, and participants receive a certificate upon successful completion.

The EBreast2 project was awarded a Golden Apple and a certificate at the event organized by the Estonian Academy of Sciences on October 25, 2024. Eija Metsälä and the project’s administrative coordinator, Siret Kivistik from Tartu Health Care College, accepted the award.

“The EBreast2 project originated from an idea within Metropolia's School of Rehabilitation and Examination. The same project team had previously produced similar research and materials in the diagnostic phase of breast cancer with the EBreast project, and we decided to continue this collaboration in a new project. It’s an honor to receive recognition for our successful and strong partnership”, Metsälä rejoices.
