Who will need to pay tuition fee?
The tuition fees concern students who are not citizens of EU/EEA countries and who have started their studies in English-taught Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes in August 2017 or after that. However, students can be exempted from the tuition fee e.g. on the basis of their residence permits.
In order to be exempted from the tuition fee at Metropolia, an applicant must deliver a copy of one of the following documents:
- Passport or identity card to indicate the citizenship of EU/EEA/Switzerland *)
- EU Blue Card in Finland
- Continuous residence permit card in Finland (Type A permit) issued for purposes other than studies. NB: Type A permit granted for studying in Finland (from 15 April 2022 onwards) doesn’t exempt student from paying tuition fee.
- EU Family Member's Residence Card in Finland
- EU residence permit for third-country citizens with long-term residence permit card in Finland (Type P-EU)
- Permanent residence permit card in Finland, Type P permit
- Brexit residence permit card, Type SEU = Right of residence under the withdrawal agreement, or P SEU = Right of permanent residence under the withdrawal agreement
*) Citizens of Finland are not required to provide proof of their citizenship as it will be verified from the population register.
The document exempting from the tuition fee must be valid on 1 August for studies starting in autumn term and on 1 January for studies starting in spring term. The document giving the exemption from the tuition fee must be uploaded to the online application at Studyinfo.fi. A photo taken with a mobile phone or camera is acceptable.

Early Bird discount
Metropolia offers an Early Bird discount on tuition fee of the first academic term for applicants who accept their study places and register as present no later than 7 days after the announcement of the student selection by 3 pm (local time in Finland). The Early Bird discount is:
- 1 500 € for study rights starting in spring term 2024 or before
- 1 000 € for study rights starting in autumn term 2024 or after
The level of annual tuition fees vary from 10 000-13 000 euros for Bachelor level studies and 11 000-12 000 euros for Master level studies per academic year.
Please note! Metropolia's Early Bird terms are currently being updated. The new instructions will be published by the end of 2024 and will come into force when applying for degree studies starting in autumn 2025.
Payment of the tuition fee
Those, who are required to pay the tuition fee, must pay the tuition fee by the deadline for accepting the study place.
The tuition fee can be paid by using the Flywire service portal (preferred payment method) or by bank transfer. Please request a payment link to Flywire from admission services admissions [at] metropolia.fi (admissions[at]metropolia[dot]fi)
Payment instructions:
- The tuition fee must be paid on student's own initiative (an invoice will not be sent).
- The tuition fee must be paid as a single payment.
- Metropolia UAS does not accept cash payments.
- When using the bank transfer as a payment method the student is responsible for paying possible bank service charges. Thus the payment must cover both the tuition fee and any transfer charges or other charges collected by the bank. Ask your bank about the charges.
- The tuition fee is to be paid twice a year (= half of the annual tuition fee per academic term).
- from 1st January 2025 onwards first year students must pay the tuition fee for the first academic year in one installment.
- Please check the amount of the tuition fee on Metropolia’s web site.
- If you accept the study place and register as present no later than 7 days after the announcement of the student selection by 3 pm (local time in Finland), you are entitled to reduce the Early Bird discount of from the tuition fee of the first academic term. Subtract the Early Bird discount from the tuition fee yourself while making the payment.

If you do not pay the tuition fee or deliver a document exempting you from the tuition fee by the given deadline, you will lose your study entitlement. If you are later able to pay the tuition fee or receive the document exempting you from the tuition fee, you may apply for the restoration of the study entitlement online at https://maksut.metropolia.fi (statutory application fee EUR 50).

Scholarships
Students enrolled to Metropolia UAS that are nationals of non-EU and non-EEA countries and studying in English-taught Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes, are due to be pay the annual tuition fee to be decided yearly by the Metropolia UAS. They are required to pay the tuition fee for the academic term in one instalment by the deadline announced by Metropolia UAS. Metropolia provides scholarships only for students who are required to pay the tuition fee.
The Metropolia Scholarship for students who begin / began their studies before 1.8.2024
The students who begin/ began their studies before 1.8.2024 may apply for a Metropolia scholarship based on their national Finnish language level test (National Certificates of Language Proficiency, YKI). The YKI system consists of basic, intermediate and advanced levels. Each level entitles you to a scholarship of 3000 euros. This means that a student can receive the scholarship at maximum of three times during their studies. The scholarship will be granted only once per academic year. For students who have started their studies on or after 1 January 2019, the scholarship is 3000 euros. To be entitled for Metropolia scholarship the YKI-test must be taken and completed while enrolled as present student at Metropolia.
The grant scheme applies to both Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes.
For students in Master’s Degree Programme, it is possible to achieve at least one scholarship. Note that reaching the intermediate level and the second scholarship during two academic years, a lot of independent work and active language usage in everyday life is needed, in addition to Finnish studies.
The Metropolia Scholarship for students who begin their studies on or after 1 August 2024
Bachelor’s Degree Programmes:
Those Bachelor’s degree students who begin their studies on or after 1.8.2024 may apply for a Metropolia scholarship based on completing Metropolia’s Finnish language courses (Finnish 1, Finnish 2, Finnish 3 and Finnish 4) and completing a national Finnish language level test (National Certificates of Language Proficiency, YKI) as described below.
Each student may be granted a scholarship at maximum three times during their Bachelor’s degree studies at Metropolia. The scholarship will be granted only once per academic year. During the first academic year the students are entitled to a scholarship amounting 1.000 euros by completing courses Finnish 1 and Finnish 2 with a minimum of grade 3 in both courses. During the second academic year the students are entitled to a scholarship amounting 2.000 euros by completing courses Finnish 3 and Finnish 4 with a minimum of grade 3 in both. During the third academic year the scholarship amounting 3.000 euros will be granted for students who complete the Finnish language level test (YKI-test) on an intermediate level based on the criteria defined by the YKI. To be entitled for Metropolia scholarship the YKI-test must be taken and completed while enrolled as present student at Metropolia.
Master’s Degree Programmes:
Those Master’s degree students who begin their studies on or after 1.8.2024 may apply for a Metropolia scholarship based on their national Finnish language level test (National Certificates of Language Proficiency, YKI). The YKI system consists of basic, intermediate and advanced levels. Passing the basic level grade 1 (corresponds to CEFR level A1) entitles the student to a scholarship amounting 1.000 euros, the basic level grade 2 (corresponds to CEFR level A2) to a scholarship amounting 2.000 euros and the intermediate level grade 3 (corresponds to CEFR level B1) to scholarship amounting 3.000 euros.
Note that a Master’s degree student may apply and be granted the scholarship only once during their master’s degree studies at Metropolia. To be entitled for Metropolia scholarship the YKI-test must be taken and completed while enrolled as present student at Metropolia.
Scholarship based on humanitarian reasons
In accordance with the decisions taken by the Board of Directors of Metropolia on 30 March 2022, 30 March 2023 and February 2024, humanitarian reasons may also be used as grounds for granting a scholarship. The decisions apply to the years 2022 - 2025 and are in force as of 30 March 2022. A humanitarian reason applies to students who have been granted temporary protection based on Council Implementing Decision (EU) 2022/382 due to the mass influx of displaced persons from Ukraine.
A scholarship based on humanitarian reasons will be used to pay for the entire tuition fees charged from the student in the years 2022 - 2025, beginning from 30 March 2022.
